Herman Melville’s classic Moby Dick will be getting a new adaptation, and this time things may be a bit different. Lynne Ramsay, writer of We Need to Talk about Kevin, has a new project based on Moby Dick, called Mobius, which will be a “psychological action thriller set in deep space.”
While taking any classic piece of literature and setting it in space seems like a recipe for disaster, there is some hope for Mobius. The co-writer from We Need to Talk About Kevin, Rory Kinnear, is on board (no pun intended) once again. We Need to Talk About Kevin was received very well by critics last year and did well on the festival circuit, so there is no doubt that the pair can write a fine screenplay.
Producing and financing the film will be Scott Steindorff and his production company Scott Pictures. Steindorff is best known for producing films based on bestselling books; he has previously produced adaptations of The Lincoln Lawyer and Love in the Time of Cholera.
While it may seem like a cheap trick to just set something in space, the cold and empty vastness may work well for a revenge story. Let’s not forget, it’s worked in the past.
