According to The Hollywood Reporter the Obi-Wan Kenobi film is in very early stages and Lucasfilm are talking to director Stephen Daldry about it.
Now don’t get all excited just yet, according to sources that talked to The Hollywood Reporter Lucasfilm are in negotiations with Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours, The Reader) to direct and oversee the development of this spin-off, which would include looking over the shoulder of whoever they hire to write the script. Oh yeah, they don’t even have a script yet, it’s that early. And yes, we have no word yet on Ewan McGregor returning to play Obi-Wan Kenobi. Since they’re still figuring out the story they want to tell in this film, I’m okay giving them a bit more time, but whatever they go with, I hope they understand that bringing Ewan McGregor back is a no-brainer.
Over the years, ever since Disney acquired Lucasfilm, people have asked Ewan McGregor about a potential Obi-Wan Kenobi film. Sometimes he would be coy about the matter (it’s Star Wars after all), other times he said he would love to come back. We would love to see him back too, so here’s hoping this all works out and this is the Star Wars story we’ll be getting in 2020, after Episode IX.
