The team behind the new indie hit Fruitvale Station are developing a Rocky spinoff that will focus on the grandson of Apollo Creed. Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler will helm the film, while star Michael B. Jordan will play the title role of Creed.
What’s more, Sylvester Stallone will be back to reprise his role as Rocky Balboa, now retired from boxing and working as a trainer. The idea for the film came from Coogler who described this as a ‘dream project’. He was put in touch with Stallone, who loved the idea, and has agreed to return as Rocky for the seventh time.
Jordan will play the grandson of Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). The story is being described as such:
Raised in an upper-crust home thanks to the ring riches earned by his grandfather, the young man doesn’t have to box and his family doesn’t want him to. Yet, he has the natural instinct and gifts and potential that made his grandfather the heavyweight champion until Rocky Balboa took his crown. Creed’s grandson needs a mentor and turns to Balboa, who is out of boxing completely and not eager to return.
This new creative team could inject some life into a tired series that petered out three or four movies ago. Coogler and Jordan’s first collaborative effort, Fruitvale Station, is currently playing in limited release.
