At one point Mel Gibson was rumored to be directing The Expendables 3, but that gig went to Patrick Hughes whose only previous credit is the low-budget Australian western Red Hill. However, Gibson is still getting involved with the film as sources say he’s close to making a deal to play the villain. He’d be following in the footsteps of Eric Roberts and Jean-Claude Van Damme, the bad guys of 1 & 2, respectively.
In recent years, Gibson has been considered somewhat of a villain in reality. It appears that art is imitating life as he will also appear as the antagonist in the upcoming Machete Kills. In that film he plays an arms dealer named Luther Voz. In an interview with “Extra” Gibson told the reporter that “bad guys are always more fun”.
The cast of The Expendables 3 continues to grow with the recent announcement that Nicolas Cage, Wesley Snipes, Jackie Chan, and Milla Jovovich would be joining the film. No word yet on if those actors will be cast as heroes or villains.
While it hasn’t been confirmed, it seems likely that Gibson would want to get involved in a high-profile project like this as his recent efforts, including The Beaver, Get the Gringo, and Edge of Darkness, all flopped at the box office.
The Expendables 3 hits theaters on August 15th, 2014.
