A new weekend is here and 3 more movies open wide in North American theaters, Morning Glory (already here since Wednesday), Skyline and Unstoppable. You don’t need to know a lot about box office to know that all this films have very slim chances to take Megamind down from the number one spot, so with that in mind, where will they rank?
As already mentioned, Megamind is going for a second weekend at the top of the box office with what should be $30 million or so, good for almost $90 million in 10 days for the latest DreamWorks Animated feature.
Unstoppable is aiming for 2nd place with the help of the 3207 theaters it opens in and the fact it stars Denzel Washington and Tony Scott is directing. The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Deja Vu and Men on Fire, all movies that have in common Denzel and Tony Scott, all opened above $20 million so expectations fall around there for this flick. I say $23 million, might give The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 a run for the title of biggest Tony Scott opener ($23.3 million last year).
Skyline will land in 3rd place if everything goes down normally. Since this is the wild card of the bunch, I don’t really know exactly what could happen. The RottenTomatoe rating is on the floor (17%) but the previews give the movie a cool premise and the visuals look good. This is after all an alien invasion popcorn flick so it could go either way. I expect Skyline to make around $17 million with a chance of going above $20 million if it really catches on (but I kind of doubt it).
In 4th place Due Date will give Skyline a run for its money since it should bring in $16 million or so while Morning Glory will finish the top 5 with $11 million. Morning Glory already made a total of $2.6 million on Wednesday and Thursday but I bet a lot more people will want to see it this weekend.
Next week it’s that time of the year again, Harry Potter time, more precisely Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, makes me very excited thinking of the numbers it could pull. Anyone want to start a bet right now regarding how much it will make on its opening weekend?
