Matt Damon may return as Jason Bourne

jason bourne ImageMatt Damon’s last outing as Jason Bourne in The Bourne Ultimatum grossed almost half a billion dollars worldwide. The Damon-less sequel The Bourne Legacy grossed a not too shabby quarter of a billion dollars, but was also the lowest grossing movie of the series domestically. Twitchfilm.com reports that Universal Pictures is eager to get Matt Damon to reprise his role as Jason Bourne for a fifth sequel. But apparently Damon is only interested in returning if Paul Greengrass (director of The Bourne Supremacy Ultimatum) is willing to return as well. Greengrass had opted out of directing Legacy, which is why Damon didn’t star in the fourth film.

In the meantime, Universal has expressed interest in moving forward with the Aaron Cross storyline, the main character played by Jeremy Renner in Legacy. It’s unknown if the fifth sequel will see Bourne and Cross team up (or go head to head), or if the franchise will go in different directions with both Damon and Renner getting their own standalone films. Universal is probably better off bringing together the two characters for one movie, as a Renner-centric Bourne would play like a second-rate knockoff if Damon were to return in another solo installment. Ironically, the 2010 action-thriller Green Zone, starring Damon and directed by Greengrass, played like a second-rate knockoff to their superior Bourne movies.

According to Variety Universal has denied reports that they are talking to Damon and Greengrass, so we’ll have to class this one as speculation until we hear something official.
