After a home invasion leaves him a widow, Matt Damon ends up having to juggle raising his son and fighting off the mob in the trailer for Suburbicon.
On the surface this looks like the sort of blend of crime drama and comedy that’s usually best handled by the Coen brothers, so it’s no surprise they co-wrote the screenplay. What makes me a bit worried here is George Clooney in the director chair. Now don’t get me wrong, he’s usually great both in front and behind the camera, but juggling different genres and striking a tonal balance is very hard even for experienced directors. Although with a bit of help from the Coen brothers he might come out on top. Suburbicon definitely looks promising, at least in trailer form. Let’s hope it’s also a good movie and who knows, maybe another Oscar nod comes Matt Damon’s way.
Suburbicon was directed by George Clooney, this being his sixth feature film in that position. He also co-wrote the film with Joel and Ethan Coen as well as Grant Heslov. Starring in Suburbicon are Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Oscar Isaac and many others.
Suburbicon will premiere this September at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. The movie comes to the US starting October 27th.
