Matt Damon is anti-Bond

Ever since the Bond franchise got a much needed makeover in 2006 some people have been comparing the action and style of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace to the Bourne movies. However Matt Damon does not think the franchises could ever be compared, and made it quite clear during an interiew with Usmagazine.

“They could never make a James Bond movie like any of the Bourne films,” Damon said. “Because Bond is an imperialist, misogynist sociopath who goes around bedding women and swilling martinis and killing people. He’s repulsive.

“Steve [Soderbergh, who produced Damon's 2005 spy movie, Syriana] told me that years ago he was offered a Bond movie,” the actor went on. “He told them he’d do it if they gave him creative control.

“‘Absolutely not,’ they said. They have a formula, they stick to it, and it makes them a lot of money. They know what they’re doing, and they’re going to keep doing it.”

Obviously Damon is going to support his own franchise, however people seem to like this ‘repulsive’ character seeing as though the Bond franchise has been going strong for nearly 50 years (with a few gaps along the way).

However, I get the feeling Damon didn’t actually mean much of what he said. Earlier in the interview he revealed that he wasn’t invited to the Obama Inauguration after campaigning for them for 2 years, so he was probably still pissed off about that.

  • I always knew he was cool for a reason. and yes, I hate Bond, too. He's so unrealistic and stupid. A white, posh, blue eyed British spy would never cut it in the post 9-11 world today. He would immediately get killed by Latin American drug warlords or Afghan warlords.
  • The concept of James Bond is out dated. Probably why I liked the Bourne movies so much. There is no place for a spy like that, times have changed. It's fine to keep making Bond movies, I'm fine with it, just set it in a different time period or change Bonds role in the world. Spies just are not what they once were as the "game" has changed, but more importantly, spies aren't viewed the same way as they used to be. I believe most people don't buy Bond as a realistic character anymore. If you went to 20 people on the street, just random people, and asked them to describe what they think a spy might be like, how many would describe Bond? I don't think it's as many as it used to be.

I'll admit, I've ripped on Matt Damon many times in the past. I really didn't like the guy or his movies. And the whole Team America bit, at the F.A.G meeting, I loved it. But I'm man enough now to admit that I was completely wrong about him. He is cool, he is a talented actor, and yes, I even like the guy. The Bourne trilogy was great, and I hope we'll get to see another trilogy over the next 8 years or so.
  • Matt is a hater lol. Kidding. I like both Bond and Bourne.

    Quote from Damon:
    "Wah wah wah wah..... waaaaaaaahhhhh."
Why are hippies always such cry babies??

if he is so anti-violence, why does the front cover to the latest film have him holding a gun with an explosion in the background. wouldn't a "realistic" spy be more subtle?

Both Bond and Bourne are interesting and cool characters, actually they are pretty similar if you think a bit. Both Casino Royal and Quantum of Solace were really good, Daniel Craig as James Bond is simply very good. In my opinion the new Bond character is actually a little bit mad, you may think the same if you think back to the balcony scene in the Quantum of Solace. Actually perhaps there may be only positive opinions about the new Bond character.
