Earlier this year Shailene Woodley (The Descendents) was cast as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and set photos of the actress shooting some scenes appeared online. We won’t be seeing those scenes any time soon though, as Woodley confirmed that Mary Jane Watson has been cut from the sequel. She’ll probably appear in the third film though.
“Of course I’m bummed,” said the actress. “But I’m a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason….based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing (Mary Jane) until the next film.”
While being cut from a big movie is never good for an up and coming actress, the prospect of appearing in the next two films (currently set for 2016 and 2018) should give her some comfort. Plus Shailene Woodley is currently shooting Lionsgate’s next big young adult franchise Divergent, so she’ll likely be a much bigger name by the time The Amazing Spider-Man 3 rolls around.
Would you have liked to have seen Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Or have Sony and director Marc Webb made the right decision?
