Magic: The Gathering movie in development at Fox

magic-the-gathering-movie According to The Hollywood Reporter 20th Century Fox is developing a movie based on Magic: The Gathering, a trading card game introduced by Richard Garfield in 1993 which still has millions of players today.

For those not familiar with the game, Wikipedia describes it as two or more players who are engaged in a battle as powerful wizards called “planeswalkers”. Players lose life when they are dealt “damage” by being attacked with summoned creatures or when spells or other cards cause them to lose life directly.

Simon Kinberg, who is involved with the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises at Fox, will be producing the adaptation. The guy seems pretty busy already, having also been tasked with writing one of the new Star Wars spin-offs for Disney.

Apparently the aim is to launch a whole new fantasy franchise similar to Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. The success of the Magic: The Gathering movie will depend on whether it can appeal to audiences outside of the current fan-base. Hasbro has had success previously by turning Transformers and G.I. Joe into movies, so they’ll be hoping to replicate that with Magic: The Gathering.

I would like it if they based if off the Realms of Dominaria, Rath, and Phyrexia. So many rich character choices, conflicts, and story potential. You could bring in Urza, Gerrard Capashen, Ertai, Karn, Squee, Mirri, Crovax, Selenia, Volrath, and plenty of others. This would be my favorite choice for a trilogy or long running movie franchise… and the leadup to Yawgmoth could be epic!

I suppose directly after that I liked the oddessy and onslaught cycles. Barbarian Kahmahl and Jeska, Ixidor Nivea, Phage, Kamahl – Warrior of Krosa, Akroma…. The Cabal. It could work but I’m less enthusiastic for it.

Another pro about starting with Dominaria is that you can reference the Brothers War as a historical and terrible event, adding an extra element of mystery to the story.

I can imagine that the movie would look like James Cameron’s Avatar, except filled with creatures from the world of Magic: The Gathering. I look forward to this so much more than the world of warcraft movie.

I forgot to mention that Magic the Gathering: Nemesis is one of my favorite books I’ve ever read.

If based on an established and well-written novel in the MtG universe, this might work. If based on actual card decks and duelers calling this mana or that mana then they’re just wasting money.
