One of my all time favourite actresses, and still an inveterate scene stealer of the highest order. Hope she makes a full recovery and goes from strength to strength for many years to come. Cannot wait to see her face off against Alan Rickman, two classy and classic performers. And by the way, Richard Harris, though indeed legendary was Irish, not British, and proud of it.

Maggie Smith is a wonderful actress, I saw her many years ago in the 1960's at the Old Vic in London which was where the embryonic National theatre was putting on their productions under the auspices of the Old Vic, I can't remember what play she was in most likely Shakespeare but her performance was brilliant. I tried to get tickets to see Othello as she was playing opposite Laurence Olivier as Desdemona, but no luck booked for months ahead. So in recent years I brought a copy of the video of Othello which was filmed later on, her performance as Desdemona was so powerful and so full of pathos, and Olivier's Othello has gone done in theatrical history, he was another actor I admired regarding his acting prowess. I also remember her performance in the film as Jean Bodie the scottish school mistress, also one of her great performances. Some people think that Maggie is new on the scene regarding acting because of her Harry Potter films
It must be over 40 years ago I first saw her on the stage. I was very sorry to hear about her cancer and her struggle against the illness, and the fact she didn't feel able to return to acting again most likely nerves played a part in that, I can 'understand her feelings as I had a scare myself some years ago regarding a breast lump which was removed and has been ok since, but to be told it is cancer at Maggie's age must be terrible. I do hope that she will be ok now she has had all the treatment and hopefully out of the woods. Hopefully when she feels much better and more rested we will see her again on the screen, she is one of our greatest actresses, and over the years she has taken on some wonderful roles, good luck Maggie you are in my thoughts.

Probably, but there are no scenes in the book of Minerva acting as headmistress that I recall. My apologies for being such a bl**dy nitpicker!

From what I remember Severus takes over from McGonagall when Voldemort takes over the school. Then McGonagall becomes it again at the end.

Severus Snape is the headmaster in Deathly Hallows, not McGonagall. At least in the book, perhaps it's yet another one of Yates's changes!
