Back in February when Logan Lerman was busy promoting Percy Jackson he let slip in an interview that “there have been a few discussions” between Sony and his people regarding him playing Peter Parker in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot. Sony denied this, and in later interviews Lerman said that it was only something he was interested in and nothing was happening, but that was most likely damage control on his part.
Now according to HitFix “Lerman is first choice for Sony Pictures and the clear frontrunner to replace Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker”. If this in indeed the case then it appears his slip a few months ago hasn’t cost him the role, which it could easily have done.
Sony have already outlined that they are aiming for a more contemporary take on Spider-Man, with the reboot focusing on “Peter Parker as a teenager battling today’s issues”. Logan Lerman is a teenager so he fits the bill in that respect, and there aren’t many young teenage actors around in Hollywood that immediately spring to mind. Sony could have gone for an unknown, but studios always like to have someone will at least some name recognition and Lerman has just come off Percy Jackson which made over $200 million worldwide. He didn’t carry it, but he was the lead and it was successful enough.
What do you think about Logan Lerman possibly playing Peter Parker? Would you have preferred an unknown?
