In 2010 Warner Bros. hired Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the duo behind Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, to direct a live action/animation hybrid LEGO film. Since then they’ve been focusing on 21 Jump Street, which opens tomorrow, and in a new interview with MTV the duo revealed they’re now in pre-production on the LEGO movie, and it will be the “smallest action movie of all time”.
Phil Lord also shared details on the plot, which has been kept under wraps until now.
“It is the story of basically a young man who doesn’t have a creative bone in his body and has to always build things from the instructions. He’s an ‘instructions worker.’ In the Lego city, they build buildings, and it turns out in this universe it’s illegal to build apart from the instructions,” Lord said. “So what he finds out is that he’s actually descendant from these like super creative Jedi-type people who are called ‘Master Builders’ and he has been charged with saving the universe from being frozen together by an evil bad guy, so over the course of the movie he has to unlearn all of that lame-o, uncreative stuff and learn how to build without all of the instructions in order to save the universe.”
With a plot like that Lord and Miller could easily let their imaginations run wild and get creative. Lord said we can expect some casting news soon, and they’re currently doing character design, writing, storyboarding, and coming up with animatics. Given that Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street are both in the high 80s on Rotten Tomatoes its clear Phil Lord and Chris Miller are on a roll, and hopefully that continues with the LEGO film which is set for release sometime in 2014.
What do you think of the plot?
