LucasFilm has already confirmed that the script for Star Wars Episode 7 will be written by Michael Arndt, the Oscar winning writer behind Toy Story 3. The Star Wars films always come in trilogies, so it’s not all that surprising to hear that development on Star Wars Episodes 8 and 9 is already under-way.
According to Deadline “Disney has approached Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg…to get the ball rolling on the subsequent installments”. THR goes even further and states the duo are locked in to both write and produce the sequels, and “the pair will write either Episode VIII or Episode IX — their exact division of responsibilities is yet to be determined”.
Lawrence Kasdan is familiar with the Star Wars universe having written The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. He also wrote Raiders Of The Lost Ark for Steven Spielberg, however his writing career has slowed down over recent years.
Simon Kinberg co-wrote Sherlock Holmes and has been involved with three X-Men movies as a writer (X3), producer (X-Men: First Class) and both (X-Men: Days of Future Past). He’s experienced with the sci-fi genre having recently produced Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium starring Matt Damon.
Hiring writers is the first step in getting the new Star Wars trilogy moving, but I don’t think fans will feel confident either way until a director (or multiple) come on-board.
