The first teaser for sci-fi film KOR3 was released yesterday, and it looks awesome.
Miguel de Olaso, a.k.a. “Macgregor,” is a cinematographer and director of commercials, and KOR3 is his upcoming feature – “coming some day.” According to twitch who have the original story, the movie is proposed as the first part in a trilogy, and takes place in the same world as Macgregor’s as-of-yet unreleased short film Similo, about artificial people designed to be perfect lovers (you can preview, and support the production of Similo here). Macgregor reportedly describes KOR3 as:
an ‘ultra-realistic’ spin on the themes of Blade Runner and Ghost In The Shell set in the world as it may be fifty or sixty years in future.
The teaser was shot in the Shanghai area in 2008, and Todd on twitch compares it to both Blade Runner and District 9. That seems to me like a reasonable link to make, as it really does look like that – but in a very good way, not a derivative one.
A quick, 2005-2009 showreel of Macgregor’s work is available on Vimeo, and displays some absolutely wonderful cinematography, save for one scene that appears quite disturbing… And while KOR3‘s 45 second teaser doesn’t show us much at all, in combination with a look at Macgregor’s past work, it’s enough to get me incredibly interested. We finally got some great sci-fi last year with Star Trek, Moon, and especially District 9, and I hope this continues the trend, whenever it’s released.
