Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers have announced in a press release that production has begun on the reboot of Godzilla, along with revealing the principal cast. We’ve already known many of those who would be appearing in the film, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Olsen, but there was one surprise; Ken Watanabe’s name appeared on the cast list as well.
Watanabe is probably best known for appearing in the Christopher Nolan films Batman Begins and Inception, as well as alongside Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai. Watanabe’s inclusion is nice to see considering how whitewashed the rest of the cast looks in a film with Japanese origins.
Principal photography has begun in Vancouver under director Gareth Edwards, and is expected to shoot in 3D. Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont and Dave Callaham are behind the film’s screenplay and Juliette Binoche and David Strathairn are rounding out the principal cast.
Godzilla will be released on May 16th 2014, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Brothers with the exception of Japan where Toho, the company behind the original Godzilla films, will distribute.
