Vin Diesel hinted earlier this week that Fast & Furious 7 could begin filming this summer, but it has now been revealed that Fast & Furious 6 director Justin Lin won’t be at the helm. According to Heat Vision Lin has told Universal he won’t back as it would mean starting work on 7 while still in post-production on 6. The director is also said to be suffering from “franchise exhaustion” having directed four Fast and Furious movies in the past 7 years.
Universal doesn’t have as many franchises as other studios, so they are being aggressive with this car-turned-action franchise. The original plan was for Lin to direct Fast & Furious 6 and 7 back-to-back however that plan was scrapped early in the development. Universal still wants a sequel in 2014 however, so another director will soon be brought on-board to make sure that happens. Apparently we can expected an announcement as early as next week.
Fast and the Furious 6 is due for release May 24, 2013. The film stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Paul Walker, Gina Carano, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris Bridges and Elsa Pataky.
