And no, Jared Leto won’t be playing the killer clown since this story will be dealing with a much younger Joker. Also Warner assembled quite the talent for this project.
According to Deadline Warner Bros. have big plans for Batman’s most popular villain, more specifically a standalone movie that would tell his origin story. To get the ball rolling they got The Hangover‘s Todd Phillips, Scott Silver and someone that really needs no introduction, Martin Scorsese. Yes, that Martin Scorsese! Sadly he’s not going to direct it (how cool would that have been?), but he will produce the film with Todd Phillips. Phillips is also co-writing the screenplay with Scott Silver (8 Mile, The Fighter). The current pitch is to make it a “gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City“. Think Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, that sort of movie.
It’s still unclear whether this film would tie in any way with Warner’s current DCEU. If you ask me I’d keep it separate, let it be its own thing. Whatever they end up going with, this movie certainly seems promising. As it’s still very early days for this Joker movie, we obviously have no release date or cast. Any idea who could play a younger Joker?
As far as Jared Leto’s Joker goes he will still be back in Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens. The latter being Harley Quinn’s female villain spin-off, which will be helmed by David Ayer.
