According to Deadline Johnny Depp is in final talks to appear in the sequel to Alice in Wonderland. Depp played the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s film, which made $1 billion worldwide in 2010 and won two Oscars for art direction and costume design. Burton won’t be back, however Disney has lined up The Muppets and The Muppets… Again! director James Bobin to take over.
Earlier this year Johnny Depp set up his production company at Disney, so he’ll be developing a lot more movies with them in the future. The two biggest projects will be Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 and Alice in Wonderland 2, but the actor is also set to appear in the sci-fi drama Transcendence, Rob Marshall’s fantasy musical Into the Woods, and just this week he entered talk to star in an adaptation of the 1970s mystery novel The Great Mortdecai Mustache Mystery for Lionsgate.
Mia Wasikowska, Anne Hathaway, and other cast members from Alice in Wonderland may be back, but nothing is confirmed at the moment. Screenwriter Linda Woolverton has been brought back to write the script.
