An adaptation of the comedic crime novel, The Great Mortdecai Mustache Mystery, is being adapted into a film with Johnny Depp in talks to star. Although the book features that wonderfully strange title, the movie will go with the more generic name of just Mortdecai. There are a series of books featuring the character of Mortdecai, with The Great Mortdecai Mustache Mystery actually being the final novel in the series. Perhaps if it’s a hit we’ll see prequels and a new franchise for Depp?
In an interview with buzzsugar.com, Depp said he hopes Mortdecai will be his next project, “There’s a great series of books by a guy named Kyril Bonfiglioli called The Mortdecai Trilogy. There’s one called The Great Mortdecai Mustache Mystery, and it’s a very funny series of books and a very interesting character.” The plot of the film is described as such:
Charlie Mortdecai, a wealthy art dealer and part-time rogue frequently finds himself caught up in strange cases of crime and espionage. Story follows Mortdecai as he races to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold. Of course, he’ll have to contend with angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist first.”
Depp will be re-teaming with his Secret Window director David Koepp on the film, while Eric Aronson is writing the screenplay. Aronson’s only other credit is the 2001 Lance Bass/Joey Fatone movie On the Line. So… uh… yeah… that’s an interesting choice. Was Aaron Sorkin unavailable? However, director Koepp is better known as a screenwriter having penned such films as Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man, War of the Worlds, and many other big budget hits, so hopefully he’ll have some creative input on the script as well.
Depp’s next film Transcendence, a sci-fi action drama, will be released on April 18th, 2014. The plan is for Depp to film Mortdecai in between his other upcoming films, a supporting role as The Wolf in the fantasy musical Into the Woods, and his return as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 5.
