According to Latino Review and Variety Johnny Depp is in early discussions with Marvel to play Doctor Strange in a movie currently part of Marvel’s Phase Three after The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Apparently Marvel saw some fans suggesting Depp for the role and it has resulted in a meeting. Things may not work out, but Depp is said to be a comic book fan and Marvel will no doubt be interest in the actor given his global appeal. Not all of his movies work (The Rum Diary and The Lone Ranger being recent examples) but I imagine people will flock to Depp playing a Marvel Sorcerer.
In the comics Doctor Strange was a self-centered New York surgeon robbed of his touch after a car accident. After a stint as a wandering derelict, he found his way to a healer in the Himalayas, where he learned to tap into psychic powers to battle evil wizards and other wrongdoers. His mind is his weapon, rather than the brute force that distinguish most Marvel superheroes.
Marvel’s President of Production Kevin Feige has wanted to make Doctor Strange for a while, and last year he confirmed we will defiantly see the Master of the Mystic Arts in Phase Three. Depp may have to fit it into his schedule, which already includes Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and Alice in Wonderland 2, but all three movies and under Disney so it will be up to them to figure it out.
What do you think of Johnny Depp potentially playing Doctor Strange?
