John Carter of Mars began filming in January 2010, which is way over a year ago. We haven’t seen a single thing from the movie so far (likely because it was shot Avatar-style indoors), although Taylor Kitsch (Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine) recently told MTV that he “saw the official trailer hours ago” and “all I’ll say is, good luck piecing it together”.
Kitsch didn’t say when the trailer would be released, but it’s obviously ready, and as Carter is a Disney film there is a chance we may see it attached to Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in just over a month’s time. John Carter of Mars isn’t released until March 2012, but On Stranger Tides is Disney’s biggest movie of the year and would be a great platform to give audiences their first look at Mars.
John Carter of Mars is directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-E) and follows Civil War veteran John Carter (Kitsch) who is transported to Mars where the inhabitants have turned to fighting one another to survive as the oceans evaporated, and the atmosphere thinned. Lynn Collins (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3), Mark Strong, Dominic West, James Purefoy and Samantha Morton also star, along with Willem Dafoe who plays a 10-foot alien with four arms called Tars Tarkas.
