Jessica Chastain won’t appear in Iron Man 3

Chastain Iron Man Image Late last month it looked like recent Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain would be joining the cast of Iron Man 3 as “a scientist every bit as smart as Tony Stark”. Fans speculated that the character could be Dr. Maya Hansen, and while that may be the case, it won’t be Chastain who’ll be playing her.

The actress revealed the news on her Facebook page:

“Sorry to say that ‘Iron Man’ 3 isn’t going to work out. My schedule is jammed packed and I can’t fit anything else in. The press announced my possible attachment far too soon. I know many of you wanted me to be involved, and I’m so sorry to disappoint you. Hopefully there’ll be another Marvel film in my future. Shane Black and everyone on the IM3 team are really wonderful. I’m very excited to see the film when it comes out. xx”

Chastain would have been a welcomed addition to the cast, which already includes Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Andy Lau, and Sir Ben Kingsley (Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow is sitting this one out). I guess we can expect another actress to be assigned to the role over the upcoming weeks as Shane Black is set to start filming this month.

Disney has set the Iron Man 3 release date for May 3, 2013. The plot of the film will borrow elements from Warren Ellis’ six-issue “Iron Man: Extremis” comic books which focuses heavily on the spread a genome-attacking viral creation known as Extremis through nanotechnology.
