Jason Flemyng, who has appeared in every film directed by Matthew Vaughn to date, has been given a role in Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class. Flemyng revealed the news to Empire at Movie-Con III in London this weekend and will play Azazel, a teleporting mutant who is the father of Nightcrawler (played by Alan Cumming in X2).
Jennifer Lawrence has already been cast as Mystique and X-Men fans will know that she is Nightcrawler’s mother, so we could be seeing Nightcrawler’s origins in First Class (if you know what I mean).
Here’s what Jason Flemyng had to say to Empire on the role:
“Matthew showed me my costume just the other day. Now I swore I’d never be in heavy make-up again, but this role is going to involve it. But at least they said, “Don’t worry, we’ll add the tail in post”. I am Azazel, and I can teleport by waving my arms [gestures like a cross between a flamenco dancer anda Bollywood star].”
We confirmed after Flemyng left the stage that he will be red, and not Nightcrawler blue or anything like that (Vaughn is clearly trusting that people can figure it out from the tail and pointed ears).
While 2nd unit filming has already begun, shooting on X-Men: First Class will get fully underway over the upcoming weeks. No word yet on who will play Cyclops, Jean and Storm or whether they are actually in it (would Fox really make an X-Men film without them and Wolverine?), although they could be keeping things under-wraps.
