After Justin Lin decided against directing Fast and Furious 7 (it would have been his fifth movie in the series) Universal began the search for a new director. Well according to Deadline they’ve found one, and James Wan will now step behind the camera to continue the action franchise.
Wan is an interesting choice as he’s mostly known for directing horror movies such as the original Saw film and Insidious. Other directors said to be in contention were Baltazar Kormakur (Contraband), Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) and The Karate Kid helmer Harold Zwart, but the studio has decided upon Wan, who has the backing of Justin Lin.
“I’m extremely proud to be part of the Fast franchise, it is an experience I will always treasure,” Lin said. “It’s time for me to move on to other things and I’m thrilled that Universal and Neal have selected James Wan to lead the franchise into its new chapter.”
The original plan was for Lin to direct Fast & Furious 6 and 7 back-to-back however that plan was scrapped early in the development. Chris Morgan has returned to write the script for Fast and Furious 7 and filming could begin later this year for a 2014 release.
Fast and the Furious 6 is due for release May 24, 2013. The film stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Paul Walker, Gina Carano, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris Bridges and Elsa Pataky.
