What will James Cameron direct next? That’s the question a few people have been wondering recently. It was thought that 20th Century Fox would persuade him to jump straight back into Avatar 2 considering the sequel will take around 3 years to make, but recently it was revealed the director was in talks to direct Angelina Jolie in the historical 3D epic Cleopatra. In a new interview Cameron spoke about both movies, but he still doesn’t know what he’ll be directing next.
From The L.A Times:
Q: There’s a lot of curiosity about what your next movie will be. Is an “Avatar” sequel a fait accompli?
A: I wouldn’t say it’s inevitable because we still haven’t worked out our deal with 20th Century Fox. So we’re still in an ongoing negotiation on that. Because it’s a big piece of business, and I’m trying to map it out as a game plan that stretches forward 10 years. And they don’t like to think that long term. We’ll get it worked out, probably. I would assign a high probability to that. Whether that’s my next film or not remains to be seen.
On the Cleopatra project:
There’s a Cleopatra project in the works, meaning that it’s been in development at Sony. And it’s a subject that’s always fascinated me. So yeah, I’ve been talking to them about it but no decisions have been made. But it sounds hot, doesn’t it? I mean, Angelina Jolie and Cleopatra? To me, that’s like a slam dunk. Whether I wind up doing it or not, I think it’s going to be a great project.
Cameron has been hinting that he wants to film Avatar 2 and 3 back to back so negotiations won’t be that simple, especially as they are talking about a multi-billion dollar franchise. The 10 year game plan sounds interesting. Does this mean he is planning beyond 3 films, or does he intend to release the two Avatar sequels between now and 2020? I guess we’ll find out when Cameron eventually decides what’s next.
