James Cameron can now fund Avatar 2 himself

james cameron avatar With Avatar making $2.7 billion worldwide the man responsible, James Cameron, was bound to get a huge payday from it all. Cameron made around $100 million from Titanic and the film’s success allowed him to negotiate a significant gross percentage with 20th Century Fox when he came round to make Avatar.

So what will Cameron receive for creating Pandora? $350 million according to Deadline, which is partly because the DVD and Blu-ray broke records and sold beyond expectations.

This sum is the largest ever paid to a director for a single movie, confirming Cameron’s ‘King of the World’ status, and he will no doubt earn more with Avatar being re-released on Digital 3D and IMAX 3D on August 27th with over 8 minutes of never before seen footage.

I can’t being to imagine what he will do with it all and it’s none of my business, but one thing he could potentially do is use the money to make Avatar 2 himself. I doubt he will do as 20th Century Fox will want in on the action again, but he could. I suppose if he wanted to go a little wild he could build his own full-sized Hometree in his back yard, although it may be a health and safety hazard.

Do you think he owns exclusive rights to the franchise? No way. 20th Century Fox owns the rights to distribute the picture along with James Cameron as the director and producer. That is a nutty thing to say James will go it alone although if 20th Century Fox did have a brain fart and then died, James Cameron could do it.
