According to The Wrap J.J Abrams has been set to direct the next Star Wars film for Disney. Argo director Ben Affleck was also said to be in contention, but Lucasfilm Chief Kathleen Kennedy is said to have been courting Abrams for a while.
J.J. Abrams is currently in post-production on Star Trek Into Darkness and has previously directed Mission: Impossible III and Super 8. Due to his experience with space movies and sci-fi Abrams was mentioned when the new Star Wars films were announced last year, and in an interview with Entertainment Weekly he said “Star Wars was the first movie that blew my mind” but he wouldn’t be taking the job because “I have some original stuff I am working on next”.
Abrams taking on the new Star Wars movie it may mean he won’t be completing his Star Trek trilogy, and the fact that he’s jumped ship will probably delight and annoy fans of both franchises in equal measure. Abrams is a solid choice for Star Wars and I’m sure there were many directors throwing their hats into the ring. Disney and LucasFilm will have had plenty of choice, and it seems they’ve chosen a director who can carve out the next trilogy of Star Wars films. Expect lens flares and secretive marketing.
Star Wars: Episode VII is set for release in 2015. What do you think of this choice?
