The first trailer for David O. Russell’s American Hustle has just debuted online courtesy of ABC’s Good Morning America. Russell has appeared to have pulled half his cast from The Fighter and half his cast from Silver Linings Playbook and put them all together in one movie. The film stars “fighters” Christian Bale and Amy Adams as well as the “silver lining” trio of Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Robert DeNiro. Not enough talent for you? Ok, throw in Jeremy Renner, Louis C.K., and Michael Pena. Wow. That’s one of the best ensemble casts in a long time. Although DeNiro, Pena, and C.K. are nowhere to be found in this trailer so it’s possible that their roles may just be extended cameos. But all the same, one hell of a cast.
This first look is more of a teaser trailer as I’d imagine the next trailer released will delve deeper into the plot. This one just gives you a feel for the tone, quick flashes of the characters in action, and a rocking Led Zeppelin song.
A fictional film set in the seductive world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock our nation, American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning British partner and lover Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild unhinged FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting. Renner is Carmen Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down.
American Hustle opens on Christmas Day. A very crowded slot with The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Jack Ryan, 47 Ronin, and Grudge Match all being released on the same date. Hopefully there’s enough Christmas cheer (i.e. box-office dollars) to go around.
