Iron Man 3 production delayed slightly due to Robert Downey Jr.’s ankle

Robert Downey Jr. has sustained an ankle injury while shooting Iron Man 3, and filming will be halted in order to give him time to recover. Most of the major action scenes will involve his CGI suit, but other scenes will require Downey Jr. to walk freely, and it doesn’t look like he can do that at the moment.

Disney issued a short statement on the matter:

“Robert Downey Jr. sustained an ankle injury on the set of Iron Man 3 in Wilmington, North Carolina while performing a stunt. There will be a short delay in the production schedule while he recuperates.”

Ben Kingsley, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Rebecca Hall, Ashley Hamilton, and Guy Pearce round out the cast, and the plot will borrow elements from Warren Ellis’ six-issue “Iron Man: Extremis” comic books which focuses heavily on the spread a genome-attacking viral creation known as Extremis through nanotechnology.

Iron Man 3 is shooting under the direction of Shane Black and the May 2013 release date shouldn’t be affected.
