Still worried about Man of Steel dropping to 3rd place in North America? Well worry not because the superhero reboot actually managed to improve on its lead around the world, despite strong competitors like Monsters University and World War Z.
Man of Steel grossed $89 million in its 2nd weekend, up from the movie’s $73.3 million debut. That was mostly thanks to 27 new markets opening the flick, China being the standout at $25.5 million. So far Man of Steel has generated an international total of $188.3 million, only $2.7 million away from Superman Returns‘ record. Worldwide the situation is a bit different with Man of Steel at $412.2 million, a new best for Superman. With more or less $80 million left to go in North America and another $200 million internationally, Man of Steel might be looking at over $700 million worldwide when all will be said and done.
Monsters University opened in 35 countries with $54.5 million in 2nd place. Looking back, the original Monster, Inc. made 272.9 million internationally. Now that’s a number well within reason for Monster University based on its debut, but for now the Pixar animation has to settle for $159.8 million worldwide. Between you and me, I’m expecting at least $600 million before this it leaves theaters.
World War Z comes in 3rd at $45.8 million from 25 markets. With a lot more countries left to open in the next few weeks, the flick has a lot of room to grow, so $200 million internationally is looking like a bare minimum. The zombie movie to beat here is Resident Evil: Afterlife with its $236 million internationally. Worldwide World War Z has $127.8 million on a $190 million (probably more) budget.
After Earth fell to 4th with $13.4 million and an international total of $114.2 million. Will Smith and his son pushed this $130 million sci-fi epic to $171.8 million worldwide. Now this needs about $90 million more to double its budget, no way that happens. Sony will lose some money on the theatrical run, the only remaining question is how much.
Rounding out the top 5 was Fast and Furious 6 riding on $11.2 million. With $647.1 million already in the bank worldwide, there isn’t a whole lot more here to go, $700 million might be a stretch but it could still happen eventually.
