So, remember when I told you international numbers (most likely) convinced Paramount to move forward with the 3rd G.I. Joe flick? Well here’s what really opened their eyes, the best opening of the year (so far), $80.3 million dollars.
Paramount says G.I. Joe: Retaliation about doubled the original flick’s take at the same point in its run internationally. So a good deal better than what happened in North America where Retaliation barely came close to Cobra’s 3-day opening in 4 days. Since the inferior (according to me) G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra went on to gross $152.2 million internationally, we can expect as much as $300 million from G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Couple that with around $120-140 million from North America and this $130 million PG-13 post-converted 3D actioner will be looking at over $420 million worldwide. For now Retaliation is at $139.8 million.
In 2nd The Croods took $52.3 million for a strong $149.3 million international total. Like Joe, this is an upgrade over the previous DreamWorks Animation feature, Rise of the Guardians, a very welcomed breath of fresh air (financially) for a studio that’s not used to box office misfires. With already $247 million worldwide, The Croods just about doubled its production budget of $135 million in two weeks.
Coming in at #3 was Chinese comedy Seeking Mr. Right with $27.1 million.
Jack the Giant Slayer came in 4th with a solid yet unimpressive $25 million, bringing the film’s total to $96.4 million internationally and $158.1 million worldwide. Having spent $195 million on it, Warner Bros. will lose money, definitely. At this point there’s no way around it and the only remaining question is how much.
Rounding out the top 5 was Oz the Great and Powerful at $22.6 million from just about all the markets out there. With $214.4 million internationally and a total of $416.1 million worldwide, Oz is the biggest earner of 2013. It should stay that way, at least until Iron Man 3 comes out.
Question of the day, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, did you see it, did you like it, why, why not?
