Sony Pictures hasn’t had a lot to brag about this year so having not one but two movies in the top 5 must feel good for a change. Elysium ended up leading one of the closest weekends I’ve seen in a long time.
With less than $4 million between the number 1 flick and the one at #5, this is what I’d call a close race. Anyway, Elysium distanced itself from the pack with $23.4 million, bringing its total to $39.2 million internationally. Once we add in there the US gross we get a worldwide figure of $95.1 million. Not a bad result after just two weeks and with the film’s production budget being $115 million, there’s a 50/50 chance Elysium might even make Sony some money.
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is starting to pick up steam after taking $21.8 million in its 2nd weekend. That’s $36.5 million internationally and $75.4 million worldwide, a long way to go until it can become profitable. Now Fox spent $90 million on this and unfortunately for fans, it will more than likely end up lower than the original worldwide ($226.5 million), so don’t expect to see Percy Jackson: The Titan’s Curse anytime soon (if ever).
The Smurfs 2 gets another $20 million for a solid yet unimpressive $150 million international cume. I say unimpressive because just two years ago The Smurfs left theaters with $421.1 million internationally. At the rate it’s going, The Smurfs 2 won’t get past $300 million internationally. But hey, who am I kidding here, The Smurfs 2 has already doubled its budget worldwide in less than three weeks, so obviously The Smurfs 3 is still on track for 2015.
Thanks to another fantastic result coming from China ($14.6 million), Pacific Rim ended the weekend with $20 million. That puts the blockbuster at $384.4 million worldwide and on track to finish past the $400 million mark, mostly thanks to the film’s phenomenal success in China where it is already passed $100 million.
Despicable Me 2 rounds out the top 5 at $19.5 million for an international total of $435.2 million. With $781.1 million worldwide (and still going strong) Despicable Me 2 is now the 3rd (soon to be 2nd) highest grosser of the year and the 8th animation of all time.
