Last week’s South Korean The Face Reader passed the torch to Chinese film Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Sea Dragon, a prequel to 2010’s Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame. For some western flavor Runner Runner came in 2nd after opening internationally a week ahead of its North American release.
Young Detective Dee: Rise of the Dragon pulled in $17 million to score an easy win around the world. Back in 2010 Detective Dee grossed $51.7 million worldwide, a good deal more than the $20 million it cost to produce (which is not exactly cheap to begin with for a foreign film). Judging by its opening, Young Detective Dee should end up right around the same figure by the time it leaves theaters.
Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake thriller Runner Runner rolls in 2nd with $11.9 million coming from 43 markets (lead by Russia’s $3 million). The R-rated flick opens October 4th in North America.
The international box office still has a bit of blue in it with $8.3 million for The Smurfs 2. That brings the Smurfs to a smurfing $251.1 million internationally and a less then smurfing (but still good) $321 million worldwide.
Disney’s Planes did $7.9 million in 4th, thus flying to an international total of $81.4 million. Insert $169.1 million worldwide on a $50 million budget and a few suits up there at Disney are probably giving each other a pat on the back. Not exactly setting the world on fire but still a solid hit for the Mouse. Since Iron Man 3 and Monsters University already payed for The Lone Ranger (and then some), it’s all money in the bank now.
We’re The Millers rounds out the top 5 at $7.6 million and $95.4 million internationally so far. Worldwide the hit comedy stands at $237.9 million. That’s up there for both Jason Sudeikis (2nd, soon to be #1 highest worldwide grosser) and Jennifer Aniston (3rd soon to be 2nd). I won’t be surprised if we’re treated to this pairing again in the near future. That being said I won’t call We’re The Millers 2 just yet (not that it would stop Hollywood doing the darn thing anyway).
