Actually the title should be Inception versus Nicholas Cage but really, there’s no contest, Inception will win the weekend without breaking a sweat and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is going to need a miracle to even reach 2nd place.
Good reviews, Chris Nolan (as in The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Memento and The Prestige Chris Nolan), 3792 theaters and weeks of good tracking helped by great marketing will make Inception a winner at the box office for the weekend. Most experts estimate it should have a similar opening to Star Trek, $75 million but I’m actually going higher, $81 million. First Shutter Island, now this, Leonardo DiCaprio is having a great year, no doubt about it.
On the other hand The Sorcerer’s Apprentice opened on Wednesday and has grossed so far $7 million in 2 days, really disappointing for Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer. This is coming in 3504 theaters and it should do around $17-$20 million for the weekend for a 5 day total of $24-$27 million, even lower then the already low expectations of the studio. First Prince of Persia and now this, things aren’t looking to bright for Jerry Bruckheimer anymore and I bet he can’t wait to get Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides out already (same goes for Disney).
Despicable Me is going to finish in 2nd place after Inception with around $28-$32 million and based on the weekdays that will follow, this could still be on track for over $200 million in North America when all is said and done, regardless, they are already working on a the sequel.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon, in 4th place, will probably settle for about half of what Despicable Me makes, decent hold that should get the movie very close to 270 million in just 19 days. Definitely going to pass $300 million this time.
And finally Toy Story 3, in 5th place, probably $14 million, for what should look like $365 million made in a single month. Getting ever so close to $400 million but I doubt it can pass Shrek 2 ($441.2 million) and become the highest grossing animate movie ever (not adjusted for inflation, obviously).
