/Film received a hi-res image of Dev Patel as Zuko from The Last Airbender. The image has been floating around the net for a few days, however I’ve waited till it was officially released before posting.

Based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon animated TV series, the live-action feature film is set in a world where human civilization is divided into four nations: Water, Earth, Air and Fire.

The Fire Nation is waging a ruthless, oppressive war against the other three nations. The film’s hero, the reluctant young Aang (Noah Ringer), is the “Last Airbender” — the Avatar who, according to prophecy, has the ability to manipulate all of the elements and bring all the nations together.

Aided by a protective teenage Waterbender named Katara (Nicola Peltz) and her bull-headed brother Sokka, Aang proceeds on a perilous journey to restore balance to their war-torn world. Dev Patel plays the Fire Nation’s evil prince Zuko. Exiled from the Fire Nation by his father, Zuko is sent to capture the Avatar in order to restore his honor and right to the throne.

  • i dunno...but the clothes, the hats and the dude...they just look so typical evil russian characters to me^^ ... I mean ...they walk on snow!

Edit: ah ok i see where its going...they at the water guys living place .. just saw em in background...so we'll see that in beginnning of the movie

One line has put me off the whole film "Evil prince Zuko", I'm sorry but Zuko has NEVER been evil, they're going to character fuck him
  • Karah
Wait, so in TLA (based on Avatar: The Last Airbender which was set in an "Asian fantasy world")

    Water (heroes) = white
    Air (heroes)= white
    Earth (minor)= East Asian/African
and Fire (villains) = South Asian/Middle Eastern/Maori/white... wtf?

Okay, if you can't see a problem here, you need to readjust your apathy goggles (i.e. take them the heck off!)

Where did you get this information? In that image, Zuko is the only non-white character of the Fire Nation soldiers. Quite frankly I'm glad that a South-Asian actor is being cast as a character who isn't distinctly South-Asian. Don't you think you're being a little over-sensitive?

    M. Night...Shyamalan lost his touch cuz this movie mind as well be a huge bomb.
  • Zuko
Shut up karah. Zuko ends up being one of the shows main protagonists and is by far many peoples favorite character, including mine. And how often are Caucasians portrayed as the villians in international films. Racism happens, get over it. Go find a serious racism problem instead of complaining about it in a film where its *barely* (if at all) happening.
  • Karah
First, I was referring specifically to TLA, not the overall series. Zuko is a favorite of mine as well but consider the fact that in the end, you still have genocidal villains that will (and are) being played by actors who have been chosen primarily because they are dark-skinned (and yes, they are all very talented and in other roles would have been great for this film).

Second, this is a serious problem because TLA is not an isolated incident. Tell me this, how many East Asian movie protagonists have there been in U.S. films? There's simply too long of a history of roles written for minorities being whitewashed. And unfortunately Yellowface is still just way too common.

Third, "racism happens, get over it." Obviously you're sitting on a nice comfy couch of privilege. Rape happens too, does that make it okay? Just because something happens and happens all the time does not make it OK. Frankly, I'm sad for you that you have such a warped view of the world.

P.S. Thanks to... ?????, for having my back and presenting solid points on the subject.

To take a show that is deeply rooted in Asian culture and tradition, and make it into a movie that has thus far only served to perpetuate the aversion towards lead Asian actors in American cinema is utterly disgusting. This movie is an insult to the original creators of the show and all those involved, the true spirit of the show, and the fans that saw something so much more than a kids' show. This post calls for everyone who believes in a just cause to stand up and protest this movie. We are not mindless fools who will buy into a product simply because it is stamped with a familar title.

    Avatar forver!

2 true. i reckon instead of the movie, they should have kept going in a little spin off sereis with the unresolved problems like Zuko's mother. The last we see is him asking ozai about it. btw wheres appa and momo?
  • Vegetang
I was disappointed with DragonBall Evolution, and now this movie seems to be doing the same thing....

Why isn't there someone out there who can do amazing shows like Dragon Ball Z and Avatar justice?
  • ?????
Uh, wow... how really rude to Karah.
The difference between Caucasians being depicted as villains in the international film circuit (if that is what you mean) is because of a country that has a homagenous race. They are not exactly educated on equality and representation just like the US or Canada is. Meanwhile, the US HAS a mixing pot of difference races and ethnicities and despite that, they NEVER get the front and center attention like in other countries (ie. Japan has an all Japanese cast). In fact, we NEVER get acknowledged that besides the stereotypes, we CAN act, we CAN sing, we CAN dance if Hollywood would just GIVE us a good roll to slip into. This is NOT one of them!
Even though Zuko does end up as one of the protagonists later in the series, people who have NEVER seen the animated version of Avatar do not know this. As a Japanese-American, I view this as the ever STILL discrimination of depiction that Middle-Easterns are considered 'the dark-skinned evil axis of power.' I am sick and tired of it!
I would have been fine with Dev Patel as Sokka instead, but they go and cast him in THIS role that does not suit, nor even look the part of the character! Yes, racism happens all the time, but IT HAS TO STOP! PERIOD.

I prefer Dante Basco to be Zuko.

    I'm sticking with this:
Water = Eskimos in real world | Southeast Asian and South Asian races can also be casted
Air = Tibet in real world | East Asians can also be casted
Earth = China in real world | East Asians can also be casted
Fire = Japan in real world | East Asians can also be casted

I'm not specific as to races but at least look the part. Ugh! Please
  • Hello
oh so now their russian too.
  • DUDE
GEEZ ITS JUST A MOVIE, IN THE ORIGINAL CARTOON, NON WHITES ARE THE VILLAINS TOO SO WHY NOT MAD ABOUT THAT TOO!!!

i love i love dev patel - he is a yummy little dumpling of goofyness. i love zuko (and dante baco) dante wudv looked right for the part as well but hes getting a little olf (i loved him as rufio!!) but i guess he looked teenage enough in take the lead.. dev wasn cast as zuko 'cos hes indian- he was cast because (blonde and caucasian) jesse mrcartney or whoever had a booking clash and m. night isnt just coincidentally indian- dev happens to be kick ass (no pun intended) at martial arts.. hes a very skilled fighter in tae kwon do- so obviously this helps:P noah is also a martial artist... both are a real inspiration- but i dont expect much out of this film- its SO difficult to make anime into live action well- i always wanted a neon genesis movie but it wud be impossible to get right- so would say, a live action sailor mooon movie.. this is a tiny bit easier as there arent really any moon scenes or giant mechas involved but its still tough to puill off- hopefully not as crap as dbz.... (i also heart jacksone rathbone!) yayy! i think the scar was a bit too light...according to this picture its hardly disfiguring enuff... hehe neways i think it wud b so cool to play princess azula cos im evil by nature and im indian so ill look like dev and im pretty arite in martial arts also:) i wish i could go to casting calls but im in australia POO:(
