I Am Legend Alternate Ending Makes Me Want To Grenade Myself!

The alternate ending to Will Smith’s I Am Legend has found its way onto YouTube. If you haven’t already seen I Am Legend then shame on you! It was a great film and although the ending was not perfect, it is better than what you are about to see. The title of this post kinda gives you a hint as to what we got in the theatrical version, and you can see the other ending below.

Apparently this was supposed to be in the final film, but Warner Brothers didn’t think the ending would please the mainstream audience, which I agree. You have zombie mutants running around trying to kill Will Smith’s character throughout most of the film, and when they finally get to him, the alpha male and himself have a moment and then the zombies run away, leaving Robert Neville and company to live happily ever after. BORING!

I’m glad Robert Neville blew himself up.

That was the point of the book though, it ends with Neville ALIVE, he becomes the 'legend' , the myth that once was vampires is now him. The entire reason the book is titled 'I Am Legend' !!!

I suggest you read the book before making statements about the movie and its endings. The alternate ending is actually closer to the books ending then the original ending. But, minds like yours would not understand it, so that is why they chose the one they did. People don’t want to understand a movie, they just want to watch it. That defeats the whole point of a ‘story’. Read the book before you pass judgement. If you can’t understand it, ask someone who does and they will explain it to you.

John, maybe if you really read what he was saying up there. The ending would have been illogical. Just like he said, the filmmakers made it seem that the entire film was about the alpha male trying to kill Nevile…not to try and find his "love." The character they had convinced us is a psychotic killing machine suddenly finds a heart out of nowhere?

It's not to say that it's a stupid ending at all. In fact, I'm sure the book made that kind of ending understandable. But something tells me that the filmmakers skipped over the more thought-provoking sides of the book and stuck with the action-y parts, therefore making the gut-wrenching ending kind of moot.

And for the love of God, stop sounding like one of those elitists who always has to spew out something to the extent of "well, simple minds like yours couldn't possibly grasp something to profound." Yeah, we could. The alpha leader had been searching for his love, the same "zombie" that Neville had taken; that was the entire reason for the main attack. Not that hard to grasp…just kind of pointless when they were going for an action film.

I just recently saw I Am Legend and the alternate ending a week or so later. I have to say that I expected the alternate ending rather than the theatrical. There were obvious clues to this throughout the movie. Not sure why some didn’t see that. The theatrical ending made me wonder why the parts that pointed to the alternate ending were even there.

And for the record, I’ve never read the book.
