Hugo Weaving confirmed as Red Skull in Captain America

Back before Chris Evans was chosen to play Captain America Hugo Weaving was in talks to play Red Skull, the villain in the film. Weaving was never officially cast however, and he was still in negotiations two weeks ago when Hayley Atwell was cast as Peggy Carter.

Well today Marvel confirmed that Hugo Weaving will play Johann Schmidt aka Red Skull in The First Avenger: Captain America. No word on why negotiations have taken nearly two months, but I suppose that doesn’t matter now. Weaving will be heading back to London with The Wolfman director Joe Johnston when filming gets underway at the end of June.
