This September was notoriously poor at the box office, but one movie still managed to turn a nice profit, the animated hit Hotel Transylvania. After such healthy box office returns, it is no surprise that a sequel has already been ordered.
Audiences and critics were fairly divided on the film, and will likely be equally divided on the sequel. Its reputation seems to have been hurt by its star, Adam Sandler, whose last few films have been simply horrible; however none of that seemed to have any effect on the film’s tremendous box office returns. I found myself siding with the film’s supporters, who will surely be curious to see where the characters will go next.
The sequel will need to find a new director, as the first film’s director Genndy Tartakovsky, will be busy working on another piece of Sony animation, Popeye, due out September 2014. Hotel Transylvania 2 is set for a release date of September 25th 2015.
Sony Pictures Animation, like its main rivals Pixar and Dreamworks, has already announced sequels to its popular properties. Other than Hotel Transylvania, Sony also announced a sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs called Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers, as well as Smurfs 2 and 3.
