Hereafter looks at people dealing with death and near-death experiences. One of the characters is caught in the tsunami that killed thousands of people in Thailand in 2004. According to the New York Times, an official from Warner Entertainment in Japan said that the scenes depicting the tsunami are “not appropriate” at the present time and the film would no longer be shown.
Hereafter was released in Japan in February in about 180 theaters. Warner had planned to continue its run until late March.
