Will Smith is the Genie, Mena Massoud will play the titular hero Aladdin and Naomi Scott will join him on the magic carpet as Jasmine.
For months now we heard rumors about Will Smith stepping inside the lamp to take on the role Robin Williams truly made his own 25 years ago. Well it’s now official, he will play the Genie, to which I say let’s wait and see what that looks like before we raise any torches. No one is ever going to match Robin Williams and I’m sure Will Smith will give it his own spin. Honestly I’m much more on the fence about Guy Ritchie than the cast. Naomi Scott, Jasmine, we’ve seen earlier this year in Power Rangers while Mena Massoud, Aladdin, is a relatively unknown actor. In my eyes both look the part, hopefully they can also play (and sing) the part.
The plan is to start filming next month with Guy Ritchie directing a screenplay by John August (Big Fish, Corpse Bride), based on the 1992 animated classic and ‘Aladdin and the Magic Lamp’ from ‘One Thousand and One Nights’. Disney are still looking for actors to play Jafar and his sidekick Iago as well as the Sultan. There’s no official release date yet but Disney do have August 3rd 2018 marked as Untitled Disney Live Action Fairy-Tale. If they indeed start principle photography in August then that date might not be a stretch for Aladdin, although a late 2018 release definitely makes more sense timing wise.
