guaridans of the galaxy film image Image According to Heat Vision Marvel has hired three-time black-list writer Chris McCoy to rewrite the script for Guardians of the Galaxy. Nicole Perlman (a graduate of Marvel’s writing program) wrote the first draft, but McCoy will now take over.

Guardians of the Galaxy are “a team of superhuman and extra-terrestrial adventurers dedicated to the safeguarding of the Milky Way Galaxy from any force that threatens the security or liberty of its various people”.

The team includes Star-Lord (a human interplanetary policeman), Drax the Destroyer (a resurrected superhuman warrior and nemesis of Thanos), Groot (a plant monster who can control trees), Gamora (a dangerous female assassin who has a preference for knives and swords) and Rocket Racoon (a genetically altered racoon who can fly a plane and carries a laser pistol).

With the August 2014 release date set we can probably expect filming to begin sometime in 2013. Expect news of the director and cast to be announced over the upcoming months.

Why do I think this movie is gonna be crap? And, hey, is this tied into Avengers storyline? Cuz, I really hope it’s not… I don’t know how this will turn out…

Of course it is related to The Avengers. Guardians of the Galaxy have a close relationship with Thanos, the villain that appears at the end of The Avengers.

Oh… That’s sort of sad to hear… But Marvel may find a way to make it awesome… The concepts are getting too ridiculous for me… Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Hawkeye, Black Widow are all okay for me… And for all those characters, I can perhaps accept Thor too even though it’s completely illogical to visualize a character like Iron Man, whose powers are entirely grounded in technology, and Thor who is basically a god, in the same world… I have heard some scientific justifications of Thor, but when you look at the movie Thor you can see it’s all fantasy, there are parts of it that cannot be explained through science (like Odin sending the Hammer with some chant that will magically decide when it should return back to him, did he code it by just speaking to it?)… However it can be accepted considering the movie as a whole.. But now this? Looking at the poster alone, I can’t help but wonder how you can fit characters like Bruce Banner and Tony Stark into this world… They are scientists, how can they possibly not laugh at the idea of a tree guy and a racoon guy? There is a point after which you just can’t scientifically justify what’s going on, and Guardians of the Galaxy is that point…

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” – Arthur C. Clarke

If done right this could be a totally awesome and different kind of super-hero movie. And actually, as scientists, the characters of Bruce and Tony would the most fascinated with the idea of a tree guy and a talking raccoon. After watching Thor, Loki, a whole alien army with flying whales included, they know there’s weird stuff out there in space. I mean the Hulk is impossible! really! is a super-hero movie trying to justify its existence through science is a futile effort.

The origin of Hulk is sort rooted in some sort of science, however obscure and implausible it is… They try to explain how it was created and something remotely resembling an explanation is more than enough for me… This is all a product of fantasy and creativity so we should be open to pretty much anything as long as all the components mesh together cohesively… My fear is that with films like these, they are completely removing the pretense of even trying to make sense of it… and that, thematically, Avengers (except Thor) may not gel with the Guardians of the Galaxy…

But you are absolutely right… Going too deep into it would be futile and quite frankly unnecessary… The Avengers was really awesome, and the entertainment value of these Marvel movies have been really great and I have really enjoyed all the movies they have made till now… It would be really nitpicking on my part to say these things… I am definitely going to watch this movie and I am sure that I will love it…

“Genetically altered racoon”? I can see cashing in on the success of other comic based adaptations, but with the trend of movie-goers looking for more serious, gritty versions of the genre, I can’t see a racoon fitting in.
The LOTR Ent ripoff had me troubled as did the Rocketeer, Baraka, and Zula (look up the names if you need to). Then the racoon. They went from not very creative to “Holy shit, a racoon, we’re crazy!” creative.
With as silly as The Avengers got at times it never breached the goofy/cheesy/Batman & Robin line. I imagine, with all the amazing abilities of The Avengers, that a fighting racoon would come off as completely laughable, and not in the funny,Tony Stark kind of way.

rocket raccoon will be played like puss in boots. cuddly and cute at first, but in reality, a bad ass voiced by someone like ray winstone who loves giant guns. whats not to love?

The Original Guardians of the Galaxy, was IN the future, and each one came from one of the 9 planets.  They basically were mostly humans geneticaly altered to adapt and live in the harshness of the planets, mostly.  As in a guy from Jupitar was squat and super strong, from the intense gravity.  a guy from pluto if i remember right was sorta crystialized to survie in the extrem cold of the farthest planet.  Etc etc , And because of this bacisscaly this was a FTURE team.

I am rather certain they will not appear in the same movie. They share a villain, yes, but I believe that is all they will share. No announcement of a combined film was ever made, and I agree The Avengers would look way to serious next to that bunch.

Have you guys even read the comics? Great story, and fun… the banter between the characters is similar to that of the Avengers movie… plus Rocket Racoon is hilarous. Yeah I’m worried this might not translate into a movie well, but rather than complaining bout how this might be a mistake, I’ll just wait and see what happens.
