Could we be looking at this year’s Argo? Like last year’s Oscar winning movie, The Monuments Men is a historical thriller that’s based on a true story and directed by a movie star. Plus John Goodman’s in it. Sounds like a winner. Instead of Ben Affleck, Argo producer George Clooney is steering the ship on this one, both directing and starring in the film. The rest of the all-star cast includes Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin, and Bob Balaban.
It’s hard to tell exactly what the tone of the film will be based on this trailer. Are they going for something more fun à la Oceans Eleven or more serious à la Saving Private Ryan? Or perhaps split the difference? Either way, the movie looks real solid, and will undoubtedly be an awards contender with the subject matter and talent involved.

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is a dramatic thriller focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.
The Monuments Men opens on December 18th.
