According to Australian newspaper The Courier Mail (via MovieHole) Australian supermodel turned actress Gemma Ward has joined Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. She will be playing a mermaid alongside French actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey, and there will be a few more fish-legged ladies I’d imagine.
Ward is one of Australia’s most successful models, having appeared on the cover of more than 30 issues of Vogue magazine around the world. Over recent years she has turned her attention to acting, tormenting Liv Tyler as Dollface in The Strangers.
In related Pirates news Disney has confirmed that Geoffrey Rush will be returning as Captain Hector Barbossa. Rush said he would be returning last year and Barbossa has been mentioned in the synopsis so I assumed this was already official. It seems Disney just wanted to confirm the casting before filming begins later this month.
Joining Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush on the next outing will be Ian McShane as Blackbeard, Penelope Cruz (who plays his daughter), Stephen Graham as Scram, Astrid Berges-Frisbey as mermaid Syrena and Sam Claflin as “a youthful missionary”. The film will follow Jack Sparrow and Barbossa as they sail to find the fountain of youth together, only to find that Blackbeard is after it too.
