In the historical war drama Darkest Hour Gary Oldman truly becomes Winston Churchill, losing himself in a part that might just get him his first Oscar.
“Within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a skeptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history.”
It might be hard to believe but Gary Oldman has only once been nominated for an Oscar, in 2012 for his leading part in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Based on the Academy’s love for transformations such as the one we see here, I’d say Darkest Hour is probably his best chance yet at an Oscar. Of course at this point we don’t yet know his competition, but based on this trailer I’m definitely rooting for Gary Oldman. At the very least we know where the makeup award is going.
Darkest Hour was directed by Atonement helmer Joe Wright (he also directed Pan, we’ll forgive him for that) and was written by Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything). Starring in the film are Gary Oldman, Lily James, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ben Mendelsohn and many more.
Darkest Hour opens November 22nd in the US and early 2018 in the rest of the world.
