Filmonic rarely covers TV news, but it’s not everyday a TV show like Game of Thrones comes along. For those who didn’t catch it on HBO Sunday night (or Sky Atlantic in the UK) Game of Thrones is based on author George R. R. Martin’s best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels and chronicles the violent dynastic struggles among noble families for control of the Iron Throne.
The series is created and co-written by David Benioff (Troy) and Dan Weiss and has been described as The Sopranos meets Lord of the Rings, with Boromir himself (Sean Bean) leading the cast. I watched the first episode and was impressed with how good it was, having only heard about it a few days ago. The location shots in Ireland and Malta are fantastic, and being a fan of medieval/fantasy movies I can see myself really getting into it (the series is estimated to have cost $50 million – 60 million).
Following strong ratings and huge potential for foreign sales and DVD/Blu-ray purchases HBO have decided to renew Game of Thrones for a 2nd season, so if you’re interested in watching a great new TV show now is the time to do it.
Here’s a trailer for the series:
…and here’s a 25 minute ‘making of’ featurette which is well worth watching as it gives you back-story on all the characters, and the series as a whole:
