If you’re seeking an alternative to The Expendables, look no further than RED 2! This all-star follow-up to 2010’s hit comic-book actioner, RED, sees returning stars Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, Mary-Louise Parker and John Malkovich, joined by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins, among others.
This time the team must reunite (and once again come out of retirement) to embark on a global hunt for a stolen portable nuclear device. The trailer promises more high-octane action and (even) more quirky humour than the original.
At a first glance, the film seems to have the potential to be a vast improvement on the decent original, but interestingly focuses (perhaps) too heavily on the returning stars and not enough on the new additions. Yes, it is important to establish that Bruce Willis is back and doing what he does best, but it is not clear how this instalment will offer us anything we haven’t already seen (and enjoyed) before.
RED 2 currently seems like a ‘safe’ sequel that will entertain but ultimately under-whelm audiences, though with the addition of the fantastic Anthony Hopkins, it does seem baffling as to why they don’t capitalise on his own star-power from the start.
RED 2 is scheduled for release on August 2nd 2013 in both the UK and US.
