Lionsgate has given us the first trailer for Dredd, the new futuristic action thriller from Vantage Point director Pete Travis and Sunshine writer Alex Garland.
Based on the Judge Dredd comic books (Stallone was in a film adaptation back in the 90s), this story follows an enforcer (Karl Urban) and his young protoge (Olivia Thirlby) as they blast their way to the top of a high rise apartment complex to bring down the brutal Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), who controls the flow of a drug that’s crippling Mega City One.

Comparisons to The Raid aside (this movie went into production a long time before Gareth Evans martial arts movie took the action film world by storm), I think this actually looks pretty solid. Early word from a test screening says it’s shockingly violent, which this trailer barely hints at since it’s our first look and not a red-band trailer. I’ve got some faith in screenwriter Alex Garland, a guy who has done some great stuff but had trouble sticking the landing in the past, and Karl Urban has always seemed like a guy destined for a franchise of his own, so maybe this will be the one for him.
