We were teased back in November with this, now it’s time to see what The Raid 2 is really about. Here’s a glimpse at what will probably end up being one of the best action movies of 2014, The Raid 2: Berandal.
If you’re reading this and wondering why an Indonesian action flick is getting this much attention, well then you probably haven’t seen The Raid: Redemption. Gritty intense action, martial arts, excellently choreographed fight scenes, if you’ve got even a passing interest in any of this then The Raid: Redemption is one movie you have got to watch.
Back to the sequel, which was just shown at Sundance two days ago, The Raid 2 is looking like a much bigger movie in every way. The scale has been ramped up considerably (to be expected since the original took place only in a single building) and you can tell director Gareth Evans had a lot more money to work with.
Initial word from Sundance cautions fans of the original, Berandal is a different beast in terms of pacing. With a running time almost 50 minutes over Redemption, Variety calls it a slow-burn gangster epic. So do go in with your expectations in check because I’m sure by the end it will be well worth the price of admission.
The Raid 2: Berandal was directed by Gareth Evans (The Raid: Redemption) and stars returning actors Iko Uwais (Rama), Donny Alamsyah (Andi, Rama’s brother) and Yayan Ruhian (Mad Dog in the original, new character here) among others.
The Raid 2: Berandal opens March 28th in the US, only a day after the Indonesian premiere.
