Lowriders is exactly what you might think it is, a drama about lowrider culture centered around a young man’s struggle to follow his heart or his heritage. Okay, maybe it’s not exactly what you thought.
“A young street artist in East Los Angeles is caught between his father’s obsession with lowrider car culture, his ex-felon brother and his need for self-expression.”
The extent of my knowledge of Lowrider culture begins and ends with a series of missions from Rockstar’s GTA: San Andreas. You know what I’m talking about, the part where you meet Cesar Vialpando. My point is that was the first thing that came to my mind while watching this trailer, and that’s pretty sad. I find this culture rather fascinating and I feel like it hasn’t been represented in movies all that well, definitely not to the extent Lowriders seems to take it. And the film looks pretty damn good. This might be something to keep an eye out for.
The drama was directed by Ricardo de Montreuil and written by Joshua Beirne-Golden, Cheo Hodari Coker, Elgin James and Justin Tipping. Starring in Lowriders are Melissa Benoist (Supergirl), Theo Rossi (Luke Cage), Eva Longoria, Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: Homecoming) and many others.
Lowriders took a while to get here, principle photography started all the way back in May 2015 and the film was first shown at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June last year. In the end it all might just pay off as Lowriders is getting a wide release in the US on May 12th.
